About Homeless Diamond
On Tuesday mornings, members of Denver’s homeless community emerge from the streets and missions with a unique agenda. Get up, show up and “step up” - to home plate at Sonny Lawson Field. It’s more like stepping back – to a time and place when life’s challenges were less daunting.
Homeless Diamond Denver is an initiative of Joe Carabello, in partnership with downtown Denver's missions, churches, and homeless advocacy organizations . Joe and a group of dedicated volunteers recruit participants, provide the ball field, equipment, instruction, and supervision for softball games and workouts to revive the spirits of many homeless individuals in Denver.
In the summer of 2010, Joe wrote the date and time of games with a Sharpie on neon-green softballs and passed them out to individuals and community groups who serve the homeless population. He sparked the interest of 11 individuals that first day and the friendly, recreational games have been growing exponentially ever since. During its fourth season in 2014, the word had spread. There were frequently more than 35 participants – enough to fill 3 teams.
